US Accuses Russian Payment Platform A7 of Aiding Iran, Denies Links

Russian payment platform A7 denied any connection with Iran on Saturday, after Washington accused it of helping Tehran evade sanctions imposed by the US administration.
A7 stated in a release that the company "categorically denies any allegations of cooperation with Iran or terrorist organizations." It claimed to provide "uninterrupted payment settlements" for the "Russian market, which is subject to illegal restrictive measures," and that its services are for "legitimate import and export of consumer goods and commodities."
However, according to the US Treasury Department, A7 has established a global network of affiliated entities to "disguise payments related to sanctioned industries and individuals as ordinary commercial activities." The statement also noted that the powerful Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has utilized this network.
The US Treasury Department announced in late August the official launch of "Operation Economic Outcast," aimed at expelling any entity assisting Iran in money laundering from the dollar system, thereby cutting off all other options for the Iranian regime and increasing economic pressure on Tehran to end the Middle East conflict.
The US Treasury Department stated on Friday that it prohibits any transactions with A7 and its sub-agents, labeling the company a "significant transnational criminal organization" and extending previously imposed sanctions to the entire network.
A7, established in 2024 by the defense-focused "Russian State Commercial Bank" (PSB), has become a leader in Russia's cross-border payment market. In response to Western sanctions, Russia has been seeking to establish alternative payment systems with major trading partners like China and India, encompassing cryptocurrencies, gold, and non-Western currencies.
