The execution of former US Army Major Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 unarmed US soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009, will be livestreamed, according to US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The Pentagon announced earlier this week that Hasan would be executed by firing squad, marking the first military execution in over 60 years.

"We'll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it's public," Hegseth stated on Thursday. "Because people need to understand that there's serious consequences for these types of things."

Hegseth mentioned in an interview with conservative TV outlet Real America's Voice that Hasan "gonna get a firing squad of soldiers. As it should be".

The BBC has reached out to the White House for comment on whether President Donald Trump supports a livestreamed public execution.

The execution is slated to occur at Fort Hood in Texas on December 3, as confirmed by the secretary of the US Army on Tuesday. This will be the first military execution by firing squad since the conclusion of World War Two.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated on Monday that the defence secretary had recommended this course of action, and President Donald Trump had approved it.

Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist from Virginia, admitted in court to being the gunman and expressed regret for "any mistakes." During his court-martial in 2013, he asserted that he believed he was acting to protect Muslims and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The killings on November 5, 2009, were the deadliest non-combat attack ever on an American military base. The shooting occurred in a busy medical building where deploying soldiers were undergoing check-ups and receiving vaccinations.
