Alert for lactose-intolerant: AESAN expands the list of affected meat products

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has included cured pork loin (lomo embuchado) among the products affected by the presence of lactose not declared on the labeling. The warning is aimed at people with lactose intolerance and poses no risk to the rest of the population.

The Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) has expanded the information regarding the alert for the presence of lactose not declared on the labeling of meat products from Spain. The update includes a new affected product: cured pork loin from the brand Jamones Alfredo Monfort, S.L., whose labeling does not indicate the presence of lactose.

The alert was initially communicated on June 23 and has been expanded following information provided by the Valencian Community through the Coordinated System for Rapid Information Exchange (SCIRI).

According to AESAN, the affected products are being withdrawn from marketing channels since the alert notification began. The agency recommends, as a precautionary measure, that people with lactose intolerance who may have any of these products in their homes refrain from consuming them.

AESAN emphasizes that consumption of these products poses no risk to the rest of the population.

Products affected by the alert

The update of the alert affects meat products from the brand Jamones Alfredo Monfort, S.L. Specifically, the products involved are pork loin head (cabezada de lomo) and cured pork loin, both marketed in different formats.

In the case of pork loin head, the product is vacuum-packed, both in pieces of 200 to 1000 grams and sliced in packages of 130 to 150 grams. The affected lots are as follows:

  • Lot 52-25, best before date 22/10/2026.
  • Lot 05-26, best before date 29/11/2026.
  • Lot 07-26, best before date 29/11/2026.
  • Lot 12-26, best before date 19/01/2027.
  • Lot 10-26, best before date 05/06/2027.

The expansion communicated by AESAN now includes cured pork loin, also from Jamones Alfredo Monfort, S.L. This product is vacuum-packed, in pieces and sliced. The affected lots are:

  • Lot 03-26, best before date 15/11/2026.
  • Lot 05-26, best before date 29/11/2026.
  • Lot 07-26, best before date 12/12/2026.
  • Lot 12-26, best before date 18/01/2027.
  • Lot 16-26, best before date 28/02/2027.
  • Lot 18-26, best before date 28/02/2027.
  • Lot 52-25, best before date 22/12/2026.

In both cases, the storage temperature indicated in the alert update is room temperature.

Recommendation for lactose-intolerant consumers

The warning is specifically directed at people with lactose intolerance. The detected problem is not related to a general risk of the product, but to the presence of lactose that is not declared on the labeling.

For this reason, AESAN recommends that those with lactose intolerance who have any of the affected products at home not consume them. The agency insists that the alert poses no risk to people who do not have this intolerance.

This type of notification is activated when a food contains an ingredient or substance that can cause problems in certain consumers and is not correctly reflected on the labeling. In this case, the absence of lactose in the product information can affect those who need to avoid this component.

Withdrawal from sales channels

The information has been transferred to the competent authorities of the autonomous communities through SCIRI, the system that coordinates this type of food alerts between administrations.

The objective is to verify the withdrawal of the affected products from marketing channels and prevent them from remaining available to consumers with lactose intolerance.

AESAN reminds that people who are not lactose intolerant can consume these products without any risk associated with this alert. The recommendation not to consume is limited to those who have intolerance and may have any of the affected lots at home.
