Security has been heightened in Delhi ahead of the protest scheduled for Saturday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Cockroach Janata Party and the All India Students Association have called for this rally. In a precautionary measure, police detained at least 1,000 people overnight before the protest.
According to 'The Indian Express' report, officials stated that these detentions were precautionary. Police have taken into custody individuals who have a history of gathering crowds and potentially disrupting the peace.
Most Detentions from Shaheen Bagh and Border Areas
According to police sources, by 12:30 AM on Friday night, around 250 people were detained from the Shaheen Bagh area in Southeast Delhi. Shaheen Bagh was a major center for protests against the CAA in 2020.
Additionally, over 100 people have been detained from Shahdara and East Delhi districts bordering Uttar Pradesh. Those detained are being sent to 13 large detention centers set up in the city.
Over 30,000 Personnel Deployed in the Capital
Given the program for Cockroach Janata Party leaders to arrive in Delhi around 10:15 AM on Saturday, security arrangements in the capital have been tightened. Over 30,000 security personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. Furthermore, all borders of Delhi have been sealed, and security has been enhanced.
Security arrangements have been made in multiple shifts, including teams of male and female security personnel along with police inspectors. Reserve forces have also been kept ready to handle any situation. Special barriers and pickets have been erected on routes between Central and New Delhi districts, as well as in South, Southeast, and Southwest Delhi.
Due to the strict security, it has become difficult for the general public to access areas like Ashoka Road and Tolstoy Road near New Delhi. Around 10 barricades have been placed on these routes, with over 30 paramilitary personnel deployed. Police have made these arrangements to prevent any untoward incidents.
