Deputy Minister of Development Stavros Kalafatis described the model Interactive Park of CERTH on Chalki as a Living Lab of a smart island and an example of cooperation between the research community, local government, universities and Greek businesses.
The Deputy Minister of Development was informed about the smart energy, sustainable mobility, circular economy, environmental education and digital technology applications being developed in this pilot model of sustainable residential development.
The Green Interactive Park of Chalki was created by the National Centre for Research and Technological Development (CERTH) with implementation coordinator IMET/CERTH, in collaboration with the Municipality of Chalki, within the framework of the 'NISOS' project. On an area of approximately 3,500 square meters, technological solutions and research applications are concentrated, showing in a simple and experiential way how key challenges of insularity can be addressed, such as energy autonomy, waste and water management, marine environment protection and adaptation to climate change.
Immediately after, the Deputy Minister of Development, accompanied by the President Dr. Evangelos Bekiaris and executives of CERTH and the Mayor of Chalki, Angelos Fragakis, visited the Photovoltaic Park of Chalki and was informed about the energy transformation of the island and the energy community model that has turned it into an international example of green transition and sustainable island development.
