RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Campfires will be allowed again in designated areas of the Wyoming side of the Black Hills National Forest starting Friday, as officials ease fire restrictions.

The Bearlodge and Hell Canyon ranger districts will move to Stage 1 restrictions at midnight Oct. 23. Under the change, visitors can have campfires in permanent Forest Service fire rings at developed campgrounds, picnic areas and recreation sites.

Other restrictions remain in place. Charcoal fires are prohibited outside approved areas, while gas and liquid-fueled devices with shutoff controls are permitted if used at least 3 feet from flammable materials.

Smoking is limited to certain locations, including enclosed vehicles and buildings, developed recreation sites and areas cleared of flammable materials. Restrictions also apply to explosives and some welding and torch operations.

The Forest Service considers fire danger, firefighting resources and conditions in neighboring areas when deciding whether to adjust restrictions.

The Stage 1 restrictions apply to National Forest lands in the two Wyoming ranger districts and are scheduled to remain in effect through Dec. 15 unless lifted sooner.
