Today, June 1, Vinnytsia mourns as it bids farewell to Defenders Yurii Demishkan and Vitalii Pirohovskyi. Both warriors bravely defended Ukraine against Russian aggression and gave their lives for its freedom and independence. Relatives, brothers-in-arms, friends, and community members gathered to see off the fallen Heroes.
The Warrior Who Held the Front
Yurii Demishkan joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the beginning of the great Russian aggression. With the call sign "Demon," he fought courageously as part of the 14th Operational Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine "Chervona Kalyna." The combat path of the senior sergeant of material support of the fire support company covered the hottest points of the front: Bakhmut, Spirne, Zaporizhzhia and Pokrovsk directions. For heroism and bravery, the serviceman received a departmental award – the medal "Chervona Kalyna." On May 28, the Hero's heart stopped. He will forever remain 48 years old.
— "Yurii believed in Ukraine's victory until his last breath and always supported this hope in us. He simply did his job without loud words and without expecting recognition," says Liubov, the wife of the Heavenly Warrior.
Yurii Demishkan was born on April 30, 1978, in Vinnytsia, where he grew up in a large family along with his brother and sister. After finishing local secondary school No. 11, he obtained the profession of car repair mechanic at vocational school No. 2. However, the man linked his work to entrepreneurship, opening his own business manufacturing metal-plastic structures. In marriage, he raised a daughter.
— "Strong, strong-willed, decisive, with a keen sense of justice — and his hobby matched: he collected and knew everything about knives, as he himself often walked on the edge of a blade," recalls his wife. "And Yurii loved to relax with a fishing rod, because only on the shore of a reservoir, alone with nature, could he find inner peace and balance. Throughout his life, he was surrounded by many friends, he was the life of any company, knew how to joke and loved to lift everyone's spirits."
Farewell ceremony for Yurii Demishkan will begin at 9:00 AM at 7 S. Tymoshenko Street, and at 10:00 AM at the Transfiguration Cathedral. The burial rite will take place at 11:00 AM at the Alley of Glory of Sabariv Cemetery.
First Into Battle
Vitalii Pirohovskyi (call sign "Kytaiets") answered the call of his heart to military service at the start of the full-scale Russian aggression. As a senior sergeant, he fought in the ranks of the 120th Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, going from the defense of Kyiv to the hottest points of the east. He was a commander of an anti-aircraft missile section and served as a platoon commander. For exceptional courage, the warrior was awarded the "Golden Cross" and the medal "For the Defense of the Motherland." The life of a devoted patriot ended on May 23 in a fierce battle near Lyman at the age of 51.
— "At the front, Vitalii gave his all. Thanks to his strong temper and experience in army service, especially in the special forces, he did everything to protect his soldiers. As a commander, Vitalii was always on the positions and was the first to go into battle, so his brothers-in-arms sincerely respected and loved him," recalls Nataliia, the wife of the fallen Hero. "By the way, it was he who had the honor of receiving the battalion's battle flag from the hands of President Volodymyr Zelensky."
Vitalii Pirohovskyi was born on September 25, 1974, in the village of Sytkivtsi, Nemyriv district, but grew up and lived all his life in Vinnytsia. He was the firstborn in a family where later a brother and sister appeared. In the city on the Buh River, he completed secondary school No. 18 and obtained the profession of a radioelectromechanic at vocational school No. 19. He worked at various enterprises in Vinnytsia, and as a merchandiser and manager, he was valued even in China. Together with his wife, Vitalii raised and brought up a son.
— "Vitalii was very kind, caring, and extremely hardworking. He practically never took a vacation; he was always at work: in the thick of events and people with whom he easily found common language," says his wife. "But above all, the man loved his family. Our safety and well-being were the meaning of his life. To protect us and the country from the enemy invasion, he went to the front without hesitation."
Farewell ceremony for Vitalii Pirohovskyi will begin at 1:00 PM at 4 Akademika Yangelia Street ("Requiem Hall"). The burial rite will take place at 3:00 PM at the Alley of Glory of Sabariv Cemetery.
