Mobile money wallet balances hit record GH¢40bn as digital payments surge

By Amoako Kwame

Ghanaians are keeping more money in their mobile money wallets than ever before, with wallet balances reaching a record GH¢40 billion in June 2026, highlighting the country’s growing shift towards digital payments and increasing confidence in mobile financial services.

The latest Payment Systems Statistics released by the Bank of Ghana show that mobile money float balances increased from GH¢28.9 billion in June 2025 to GH¢40 billion in June 2026, representing a year-on-year growth of more than 38 per cent.

The sharp increase suggests that mobile money wallets are no longer used mainly for sending and receiving funds. Instead, they are increasingly becoming convenient stores of value for households, informal businesses and small enterprises, reflecting changing financial habits among Ghanaians.

The figures also point to rising consumer confidence in digital financial services as cashless transactions continue to gain momentum across the economy. More users are choosing to keep funds in their mobile wallets for everyday purchases, business operations and emergency needs rather than withdrawing cash immediately.

The wider mobile money ecosystem also recorded strong growth over the period. Registered mobile money accounts increased from 76.4 million in June 2025 to 84.6 million in June 2026, while active accounts rose to 26.4 million, underscoring sustained adoption and regular use of digital financial services.

Transaction volumes remained strong, further cementing mobile money’s role in Ghana’s retail economy. In June 2026 alone, users conducted 954 million transactions valued at GH¢492.9 billion, reflecting the widespread use of mobile wallets for merchant payments, salary disbursements, utility bill payments, remittances and person-to-person transfers.

The industry’s agent network also continued to expand, strengthening access to financial services across the country. Registered mobile money agents surpassed the one-million mark for the first time, reaching 1.016 million, while active agents increased to 546,000.

The expansion of the agent network is expected to deepen financial inclusion by making digital financial services more accessible in both urban and underserved rural communities.

Interoperability between mobile money platforms also improved during the period. Users carried out 33 million cross-network transactions valued at GH¢6.2 billion, demonstrating the growing ease of transferring funds between different mobile money providers and improving the efficiency of Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.

The latest Bank of Ghana figures reinforce mobile money’s position as one of the country’s most transformative financial innovations. Beyond facilitating payments and transfers, mobile money has become an important platform for savings, commerce and financial inclusion.

With wallet balances, transaction values and active users continuing to rise, the sector is expected to play an even greater role in supporting economic activity, expanding access to formal financial services and accelerating Ghana’s transition towards a digitally driven economy.
