Summary

  • Illumina delivered strong Q2 2026 results, beating on EPS and revenue, and raised full-year guidance for both metrics.
  • ILMN's profitability and momentum are robust, with management emphasizing margin expansion, ongoing share buybacks, and significant cash flow.
  • Despite a D- valuation and stagnant historical revenue, Wall Street analysts are revising growth estimates upward, anticipating a revenue breakout by 2027.
  • I rate ILMN a buy on a pullback, given seasonal weakness in August-September and the stock’s current high momentum above its 30-week EMA.

In this article I will outline the bullish case for the life sciences company Illumina, Inc. (ILMN). If you are unfamiliar with Illumina, they are a life sciences tools and services company that provides sequencing and array-based solutions for genetic and genomic analysis on a global scale. They have customers on every continent as they provide their equipment and support services to genomic research centers, academic institutions, government laboratories, hospitals, and private companies that focus on pharmaceuticals and biotechnology.

My bullish thesis is based on its most recent earnings call, Illumina management takeaways, the Seeking Alpha Factor Grades for Illumina, its recent price action, and its seasonality performance.

I last wrote about ILMN in August 2024. I recommended ILMN in that article, and ILMN is up 67% since my bullish recommendation, while the SP 500 index is up 38% over the same period.

Earnings Call Takeaways

The Q2 2026 earnings call was on July 30th. The headline numbers were positive. EPS came in at $1.31, which beat estimates by $0.08. Revenues came in at $1.16B, which beat estimates by $28.38M. Revenue was also up 9.9% year over year.

There were three key takeaways for me from the earnings call.

Margins came in above their own guidance. CEO Jacob Thaysen emphasized ILMN was able to increase their margins despite “higher-than-expected costs.” That tells me that ILMN has pricing power for their products and services. That bodes well for future earnings growth.

Free Cash Flow ( FCF) for the quarter was $162M. With that money, they purchased 0.9M shares on the open market at an average price of $129.07. There is still $1.8B remaining under the current share repurchase plan. I like the fact that ILMN management stated that they are going to continue the share repurchase plan “opportunistically.” ILMN does not pay dividends, so share repurchases are the way that management returns capital to the shareholder.

Management raised their full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $4.60B to $4.64B. EPS is now guided for $5.30 to $5.40. Thaysen said, “We're also raising our EPS outlook, reflecting Q2 outperformance, higher revenue expectations, and continued expense discipline.” Investors received the three things we want from an earnings call. A beat on earnings, a beat on revenues, and increased guidance moving forward.

Valuation

I like to use Seeking Alpha Factor Grades to get a quick summary of a company’s worthiness as a potential investment. The factor grades, in some manner, apply to fundamental analysis and technical analysis and even offer a form of investor sentiment.

Figure 1 – Seeking Alpha Factor Grades for ILMN

Looking at the factor grades for ILMN you can see a mix of outstanding grades and dismal grades. The valuation grade is a D-. What’s worse is that it has been consistently so over the last six months. That is terrible, and many value investors are going to shy away from investing in ILMN because of a grade such as this. The fact that ILMN receives a grade of D for growth does not help value investors either. It’s hard to invest in a company that is considered overvalued and does not have decent growth prospects.

One reason the growth grade is so bad is that the revenues have been stagnant.

Figure 2 – ILMN Annual Revenues

Looking at Figure 2 below, you can see why ILMN has received such a poor grade on growth. Annual revenues have been stagnant over the last five years. They have consistently been between $3.6B and $4.8B.

The good news is that annual revenues are estimated to surpass the $4.8B mark for the year ending December 2027. That is consistent with what management outlined in the Q2 earnings call.

On the flip side, the factor grades say that ILMN is a very profitable company with excellent momentum and excellent revisions. The profitability grade of A is what any investor should be happy about. The momentum grade of A shows that the stock has been performing well. This could be a reason that the stock is considered overvalued at the current price.

Figure 3 – ILMN Annual Earnings

Looking at annual earnings in Figure 3, you can see that these figures have improved drastically since the year ended in December 2023. More importantly, earnings are expected to grow over the next two years. The December 2027 annual estimate is $6.10 which is 26% higher than the 2025 actual annual EPS of $4.84. That earnings growth can be achieved due to a combination of increasing revenues, increasing margins, and share buybacks.

Lastly, the revisions grade is an A+. This contrasts with the growth grade mentioned earlier. Wall St. analysts are revising their estimates higher for ILMN. They see good things in the future. Wall St. must believe that ILMN has good growth prospects moving forward despite the current Seeking Alpha growth grade.

Price Action

Chart 1 – ILMN Weekly with 30-Week EMA

When I look at Chart 1 above, I see bullish price action. ILMN has rallied strongly since the lows of April 2025 when it briefly traded below $70. It then advanced for a few months up to $110. It then pulled back and consolidated for a few months before it regained its footing in late October 2025. Then it rallied nicely before again pulling back and consolidating until it began another advance in May 2026. This week ILMN closed at new 52-week highs at $219.40. The stock has almost doubled this year. That is one reason for the strong momentum gain that was outlined earlier in the article.

ILMN is now trading at new 52-week highs, which is always bullish, and it is trading above its upward-sloping 30-week exponential moving average (EMA). I like owning stocks that trade above their upward sloping-30-week EMA. I prefer owning stocks that are trending higher, and I use the 30-week EMA as a simple filter to identify upward trending stocks. You can see that ILMN has provided nice gains for shareholders when it has traded above the 30-week EMA.

Seasonality

Looking at Figure 4 below, you can see that ILMN tends to perform poorly in the months of August and September. Looking back at the last 10 years, ILMN has averaged a -0.9% loss in August and a -3.6% loss in September. The stock shows only a 40% win rate in August and, worse, only a 30% win rate in September. Knowing this information makes me hesitant to buy the stock today. Instead of making a purchase today, I would wait for a pullback before I initiate a position in ILMN.

Figure 4—ILMN Seasonality

Also note that in Chart 1, you can see that ILMN did pull back in the August-September months in both 2024 and 2025. This doesn’t mean that a pullback will happen again this September, but I am open to the possibility.

Bull or Bear

My take is that ILMN has some good things going for it. Management is raising guidance for both earnings and revenues. Operating margins are rising. Profitability is outstanding. The management team rewards shareholders with buybacks, and there is still $1.8B remaining in the current buyback authorization.

The stock is trading above its 30-week exponential moving average. The stock has excellent momentum. All these things indicate that ILMN is bullish. I do not own ILMN, but I wouldn’t be opposed to purchasing shares on any price dip. I rate the stock as a buy on a pullback.
