We will use military actions alongside diplomacy, Iran announced

The Persian Gulf region is experiencing its greatest escalation since the ceasefire declaration on April 8. After Iran's missile attack on Israel and subsequent retaliatory Israeli airstrikes, US strikes on Iran followed. The reason was that Iranians hit a US AH-64 Apache attack helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation is not a coincidence of unfortunate accidents, but a demonstration of a new Iranian strategy. Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf openly stated that Iran must simultaneously use military actions and diplomacy, where military action creates conditions favorable to the regime. Diplomacy is then supposed to bring "legal, political and economic results."

"By threatening attack and breaking off negotiations, we will prevent Israel from attacking Beirut, and by attacking itself we will show that we are not afraid of breaking off negotiations. The result will be that they will be forced to retreat and we will assert our rights," he described the approach according to the FARS news agency.

If diplomacy is considered only as closed-door talks and smiles, according to him, it means failure from the start. "But if we rely solely on military operations and war, we will not be able to fully defend our rights," he added.

This tactic can already be seen in the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. Because Iran has managed to block it, it wants to gain sovereignty over it despite international law and intends to continue collecting so-called insurance premiums for safe passage - that is, ransom. For one ship, it amounts to 1.5 to 2 million dollars.

Similarly, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on X: "Foreign forces near our territory are under constant threat due to the possibility of their own human errors, ordinary accidents, but also the possibility of finding themselves in a crossfire. To reduce the risk, it is best for them to leave."

Araghchi did not name whose international forces he meant, but threatened: "We prefer the language of diplomacy, but we also speak other languages."

Iran counts on the fact that the United States does not want to engage in large-scale military operations. But none of the actors want that - including Iran, according to an analysis by the regime's website Nour News. According to it, all sides use military actions to improve their political and diplomatic position. Its analysis assumes that the interests of Israel and the USA are different and that Israel may sabotage US-Iran talks.
