Italy opposed NATO commitments for military aid to Kyiv in 2027.
Italy, in the process of preparing NATO members for the summit in Ankara, opposed fixing the alliance's long-term commitments for military aid to Kyiv in 2027, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported, citing sources in diplomatic circles.
On Tuesday, a meeting of representatives of NATO member states took place in Brussels, where the draft final declaration of the summit, which will be held on July 7-8, was discussed. The alliance countries were able to agree on allocating 70 billion euros for military support to Kyiv in 2026, but due to disagreements, they failed to agree on similar commitments for 2027.
According to the publication, the draft document was supposed to include a point on the allies' confirmation of commitments to maintain a comparable level of military aid to Kyiv in 2027. It was not possible to agree on these commitments due to Italy's position.
The United States, meanwhile, blocked the inclusion in the draft declaration of the Ankara summit of language about the inextricable link between the security of Ukraine and Europe.
The next round of negotiations between representatives of the North Atlantic Alliance states on the draft document is planned for Thursday.
