Italy opposed the fixation of long-term NATO commitments for military aid to Kyiv for 2027 during the preparation of NATO members for the summit in Ankara, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reports, citing sources in diplomatic circles.
On Tuesday, a meeting of representatives of NATO states took place in Brussels, where the draft final declaration of the summit, which will take place on July 7-8, was discussed. The alliance countries were able to agree on allocating 70 billion euros for military support to Kyiv in 2026, but due to disagreements, they failed to coordinate similar commitments for 2027.
As noted in the publication's material, the draft document was supposed to include a clause on the allies' confirmation of commitments to maintain a comparable level of military aid to Kyiv in 2027. It was not possible to agree on these commitments due to Italy's position.
At the same time, the United States blocked the inclusion in the draft summit declaration in Ankara of wording on the inextricable link between the security of Ukraine and Europe.
The next round of negotiations between representatives of the North Atlantic Alliance states on the draft document is planned for Thursday.
