Keelung City Councilor Wu Huajia questioned during the city council meeting today, calling attention to the severe rodent problem at the Erxin Bus Loop. She said many citizens have reported long-term rat infestations, dirty environment, and foul odors at the station, which has been jokingly called a "Mickey Mouse party" by netizens. The station is an important gateway for tourists visiting Miaokou Night Market and Breeze East Coast, seriously affecting the image for citizens and tourists. Mayor Xie Guoliang said he would ask the Environmental Protection Bureau and the Bus Administration to conduct site inspections and make improvements.
Wu Huajia stated that the rat problem is not just a public health issue but also involves environmental hygiene, public safety, and the city's image. She demanded the city government disclose the current progress of rodent control, including historical data on rat catches, pathogen carriage in rats, distribution of rodent hotspots, and ongoing monitoring and extermination results in each administrative district.
Regarding the city government's announcement of emergency procurement of 10,000 packs of rodenticide, Wu Huajia pointed out that there are reports of uneven distribution at the grassroots level: some neighborhoods can directly obtain the poison, others need to register and wait, and some neighborhoods only received a small amount. She questioned whether all 157 neighborhoods have received the rodenticide and whether resources are allocated according to the severity of the infestation. The city government should disclose information to avoid public concerns.
In addition, Wu Huajia specifically highlighted the rodent problem at the Erxin Loop. She said many citizens have reported long-term rat infestations, dirty conditions, and foul odors, with netizens mockingly calling it a "Mickey Mouse party." The Erxin Loop is a key transportation hub in Keelung and an important gateway for tourists to Miaokou Night Market and Breeze East Coast. If these issues are not improved, it will seriously affect the perception of citizens and tourists.
Wu emphasized that rodent control cannot rely solely on distributing poison. The city government should integrate environmental cleaning, hotspot management, and cross-departmental cooperation mechanisms to respond to citizens' expectations with concrete results and protect public health and the city's environmental quality.
Xie Guoliang said the city government has already distributed a large amount of rodenticide and purchased additional stock. Citizens can obtain it by going to the district office, and the government will provide it. On one hand, they will carry out prevention and cleaning; on the other hand, they will help citizens by providing knowledge on rodent elimination. The city government will place more rodenticide in sewers and ditches. Many rats have previously carried Hantavirus. As for the rodenticide, districts will allocate it according to the situation, and there is still stock, with inventory management in place.
Environmental Protection Bureau Director Ma Zhonghao said that areas needing enhanced cleaning will be addressed, and work is ongoing simultaneously in the seven districts and major roads. Bus Administration Director Zhong Huicun said that the Erxin Loop has been disinfected and repaired. Xie Guoliang said he would ask the Bus Administration and the Environmental Protection Bureau to conduct another site inspection and improvements at the Erxin Loop soon.
