The Kremlin is demanding explanations from Apple over the removal of several Russian mobile apps related to the internet company VK from the App Store. This was reported by Delo.ua with reference to Reuters. The state-controlled Russian technology company VK said its services were blocked "without warning or explanation," despite the company itself never being under US sanctions. Meanwhile, Apple stated that it complies with the laws of the countries where it operates and removed VK apps to meet sanctions requirements. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that relevant Russian agencies will contact the corporation directly. According to him, if Apple does not provide explanations, Moscow will "draw appropriate conclusions regarding the continuation of any cooperation with this company." Peskov also suggested that dissatisfied Russians switch to devices with the Android operating system.
Russian control over the internet and the MAX messenger
Russia has restricted the use of foreign technology platforms since 2022, trying to promote its own internet services and strengthen control over the online space:
- State messenger: The Russian authorities actively encourage citizens to download the state messenger MAX, created by VK. It is now mandatory for pre-installation on all mobile phones and tablets sold in Russia.
- Sanctions against leadership: Although VK itself is not under Western sanctions, its CEO Vladimir Kiriyenko is under US, EU, and UK sanctions. His father, Sergey Kiriyenko, serves as First Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration of Vladimir Putin.
Earlier, it was reported that all mobile phones of Russians would be placed under state registration. Russia passed a law allowing the launch of a database of identification numbers for mobile devices (IMEI). Based on this number, a state database will be created with information about all permitted and prohibited smartphones, tablets, modems, and smartwatches.
