LG is pushing back against reports that its smart TVs are "spying" on users, stating that wake-word detection occurs locally and that features like Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), voice recognition, and interest-based ads are optional. However, critics point out that researchers discovered TVs logging ambient conversations, and LG's response did not address broader concerns about the extent of data collection, data sharing, potential exploitation by malicious actors, or the misleading presentation of privacy options, according to The Verge.

LG's statement clarifies that smart TVs do not continuously record or transmit user conversations. Speech-to-text processing only begins when a user activates voice interaction via a supported wake-word feature or by pressing the voice/AI button on the remote. Audio for wake-word detection is processed locally on the TV and is not converted to text, stored, or transmitted if no wake word is detected. Voice recognition results and associated technical logs may be generated for voice commands but do not indicate continuous recording of conversations outside of an active session.

Speech-recognition results are used to support voice-related features and are not uploaded later when the TV is offline or upon reconnection. Features such as ACR, voice recognition, and interest-based advertising are optional and not enabled by default, with users able to manage or withdraw consent through TV settings.

ACR utilizes audio fingerprinting technology via the TV's internal audio processor (not a speaker) to identify content without collecting screenshots, screen recordings, video recordings, voice recordings, or other audio recordings. When ACR is enabled, related information may be used for audience segmentation and viewing or trend analysis. Interest-based and cross-device advertising require separate user consent through applicable agreements. LG emphasizes that protecting user privacy is a fundamental principle in the design and operation of its products and services.

The statement further indicates that LG will provide additional details on how its smart TV features operate, how information may be processed, user choices, and LG's ongoing efforts to enhance privacy, transparency, and security.
