Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.- Due to the possibility of rain during the next few hours, the Los Cabos City Council launched preventive actions and determined the opening of four temporary shelters, distributed between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
The measure was taken following the agreements established by the State Civil Protection Council and the subsequent meeting of the Municipal Council, with the aim of having spaces ready in case weather conditions require the preventive relocation of residents.
In Cabo San Lucas, the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz elementary school, in Las Palmas neighborhood, and Héroes de 1847 elementary school, located in Lomas del Sol neighborhood, were enabled. In San José del Cabo, the shelters are Cecyt 04 and Technical Secondary School 14.
Alberto Rentería Santana, general secretary of the Los Cabos City Council, explained that so far it has not been necessary to activate an evacuation process, although the shelters remain available.
“The Municipal Civil Protection Council was convened, where the opening of four strategic temporary shelters was ordered; two in San José del Cabo and two in Cabo San Lucas”.
They maintain monitoring due to the rain forecast
According to the official forecast from the National Meteorological Service, the arrival of low-pressure channels maintains the possibility of intense localized rainfall during the next 48 hours, with accumulations that could reach up to 75 millimeters.
Given this scenario, the authorities are maintaining constant monitoring of weather conditions and of the possible effects that could occur in different areas of the municipality.
Rentería Santana said that, despite the fact that no significant rainfall has occurred in recent hours, monitoring continues and the shelters remain open.
“We have not started the alert and evacuation process because it has not been necessary; we have been paying very close attention to the weather situation. Fortunately, there has been no rainfall in recent hours; however, we remain alert and keep our shelters open.”
They prepare 300 people to respond to emergencies
As part of the preventive actions, around 300 people are currently participating in alert and evacuation efforts, in addition to the personnel in charge of assisting at the temporary shelters.
According to the latest report, only one person had voluntarily gone to one of the shelters enabled in Cabo San Lucas, and so far a general evacuation has not been required.
The municipal authorities reiterated that the actions taken are preventive in nature and will remain in place while the rain forecast persists, and therefore urged residents to stay informed through official channels and follow Civil Protection instructions if necessary.
