Two people were killed and three police officers were injured after a shooting at a high-rise apartment building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon. The suspected gunman was also found dead, police said.
The shooting was reported at an apartment building near Loring Park and the Minneapolis Convention Center shortly after 4:30 pm local time. Officers reached the building within minutes after receiving a 911 call reporting gunfire. They found victims inside and then heard additional shots coming from an upper floor.
Police officers moved towards the source of the gunfire but encountered what authorities described as a ‘haze’ that significantly reduced visibility. Two officers suffered gunshot wounds, while a third officer was injured in the incident. All three officers were reported to be in stable condition.
Two victims killed, suspect also dead
One of the shooting victims died at the scene, while another died after being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. Police have not yet released details about the identities of the victims.
The suspected shooter was also found dead. Authorities have not immediately disclosed how the suspect died or identified the person. Police said they had previously been familiar with the individual.
The incident prompted a major police response, with heavily armed officers surrounding the apartment building. Residents and members of the public were urged to avoid the area as authorities secured the scene.
The FBI is assisting local authorities with the investigation. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed support for the emergency responders and urged people to pray for those affected by the shooting.
Motive remains unclear
Police have not yet established a motive for the shooting. Investigators are working to determine what led to the gunfire and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
The shooting comes amid a series of deadly gun attacks reported in the United States in recent days. However, authorities have not indicated any connection between the Minneapolis incident and other recent shootings.
