The Morena parliamentary group in the State of Mexico condemned the actions of the mayor of Metepec, Fernando Flores Fernández, during the events that occurred at the Club Deportivo La Asunción last Thursday, June 4, and demanded that the competent authorities investigate what happened to determine possible responsibilities.
Through a statement released this Saturday, the Morena legislators described the mayor's conduct during the incident, which went viral on social media, as "arrogant, overbearing, and aggressive."
The deputies pointed out that it is necessary to clarify the reasons why the mayor went to attend a "supposed emergency," as well as the circumstances in which the events captured on video and publicly disseminated occurred.
"We consider it necessary to clarify the reasons why the mayor of Metepec appeared to attend a supposed emergency, as well as the circumstances in which the events that have been publicly disseminated occurred," they stated in the document.
Likewise, they called on the authorities to investigate the events and any complaints that may be filed, in order to determine whether any conduct constituting a crime occurred and to assign corresponding responsibilities.
The legislators also recalled that the exercise of public power must be governed by the principles of legality, responsibility, and absolute respect for people's rights.
"No authority should use its position or power to intimidate others or put them at risk. Citizen trust is built with respect, prudence, and adherence to the law," they stated.
Morena's positioning comes amid the controversy generated by videos circulated on social media, in which Fernando Flores is seen entering the Club Deportivo La Asunción accompanied by armed escorts and engaging in a verbal confrontation with people at the scene.
After the images were released, the mayor issued a public apology and stated that he went to the club after receiving a call for help regarding a conflict between individuals that, he claimed, put the safety of those involved at risk.
The controversy also reached the federal level. During her Friday morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo announced that she asked the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, to review the case. The federal president questioned the attitude shown by the mayor and considered the presence of armed individuals in a private space inappropriate.
Furthermore, due to these events, the Human Rights Commission of the State of Mexico (CODHEM) initiated an ex officio investigation to analyze possible acts or omissions by authorities that could constitute human rights violations, particularly the right to integrity and personal security.
