There’s a new affordable housing development coming to downtown North Bay. The development was announced Tuesday by the City of North Bay and the District of Nippissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB).

According to a release from DNSSAB, 20 new affordable units will be built within the former site of the North Bay and District Multicultural Centre, located at 100 Main St. E.

“I think its a great idea to have additional residence downtown,” said Peter Chirico, the mayor of North Bay. “The more people that are downtown, living downtown, accessing services downtown, certainly shopping downtown, is good for our downtown.”

The funding for the development of the units is supported through the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, as part of the city’s second annual allocation. Tenants for the units, once complete, will be selected through the DNSSAB’s centralized waitlist.

Chirico said the units will be a mix of one bedroom and bachelor style apartments. According to DNSSAB’s board chair, Mark King, the units will be offered at a combination of market rent and rent geared to income rates.

In the release, DNSSAB says the development aims to provide affordable housing close to transit, services, employment and local businesses.

King says a large number of the tenants who will end up in the development will likely be seniors, due to a high number of elderly citizens currently struggling to find affordable rental units in the city.

“We’ve just gone through a complete reconstruction [in the downtown core] from roads to sidewalks to planters. It’s a very pleasant atmosphere down there, lends itself to seniors living,” King said.

Chirico said building permits for the site have already been issued, and demolition of the building’s interior has already begun to make way for the new units, which will be located on the top three floors of the four storey building.

North Bay's mayor estimated the units could be available within six months to a year.

The development is a public private partnership, delivered by Terrace Management Incorporated, in partnership with the City of North Bay and the DNSSAB.
