Boat training strengthens Okanagan fire departments

Especially during fire season.
Firefighters from North Westside Fire Rescue, Lake Country Fire Department, and Vernon Fire Rescue Services came together on Tuesday, July 28, to conduct a collaborative training exercise along Eastside Road in Vernon.
The firefighters were practicing the use of a fire boat to provide a water supply for fire engines operating on shore.
The exercise provided an opportunity for crews to strengthen working relationships, refine operational skills, and enhance coordination for future emergency responses.
As communities continue to face increasing wildfire risk, interagency training plays a vital role in ensuring firefighters can work seamlessly together when large-scale incidents occur.
North Westside Fire Chief Ross Kotscherofski highlighted the importance of the fire boat as a specialized firefighting resource.
"Our fire boat is a valuable and versatile firefighting asset that has already demonstrated its effectiveness during the White Rock Lake Fire," he said. "Our team is highly trained and experienced in establishing a reliable lake-based water supply, and I am proud of the professionalism and expertise they bring to these operations."
Regional District of Central Okanagan director of protective services and Regional Fire Chief Mike Walroth, who attended the training exercise, praised the firefighters for their commitment to preparedness and collaboration.
"I am grateful for the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by firefighters across British Columbia," said Walroth. "This training exercise is another excellent example of regional cooperation, teamwork, and a shared commitment to protecting our communities."
Vernon Fire Rescue Services Director and Fire Chief David Lind expressed appreciation for the collaboration and support among neighbouring departments.
"A willingness to work together and support one another is the foundation of our collective success," said Lind. "Strong relationships come first, and through those relationships we can continue to improve our ability to serve and protect our communities.
"Exercises like this strengthen not only our operational effectiveness but also the partnerships that make regional emergency response possible."
The participating departments remain committed to ongoing training and cooperation to enhance emergency preparedness and ensure the highest level of service for the residents of the region.
