Fire
Since Thursday afternoon, a firefighting operation has been underway in the forest in Międzylesie, Wołomin County. Approximately 100 people have been evacuated from the threatened area, and nearly a thousand firefighters, soldiers, and other services are involved in the operation. Meanwhile, experts warn that the fire risk currently covers most of the country.
Authorities emphasize that the situation is already under control, but extinguishing the fire site may take several more days. The fire department remains in constant contact with the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, which provides ongoing information on weather conditions, particularly wind strength and direction.
High fire risk in most of the country
According to the map published on Friday by the Forest Research Institute, fire risk in forests concerns the predominant area of Poland. It covers the western, central, and central-eastern parts of the country, as well as the Opole, Silesian, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeships, and part of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship.
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management also reports a forecasted high and very high fire risk over most of Poland's territory. The highest indices are recorded in the voivodeships: Lubusz, Greater Poland, Lower Silesian, Opole, Łódź, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, Masovian, Świętokrzyskie, Silesian, and Lublin, as well as in parts of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship.
IMGW calls for caution
Meteorologists point out that current conditions favor the rapid spread of fire. As IMGW emphasized, this is mainly due to low litter humidity, lack of precipitation, and gusty winds occurring in the eastern part of the country.
Low humidity, no precipitation, gusty winds in the eastern half of the country favor the rapid spread of fire. A moment of inattention is enough – a cigarette butt, a spark, or a campfire – the Institute warned.
IMGW also appealed to people staying in forested areas to exercise extreme caution and strictly follow the instructions of the services. Experts remind that even a small source of fire can, under current conditions, lead to a large-scale fire.
