New York State Democratic primary results were announced on Tuesday (June 23 evening). New York City Mayor Mamdani supported multiple candidates who emerged victorious, indicating the continued expansion of left-wing forces in New York.
In the 10th District, former New York City Comptroller Bud Land, supported by Mamdani, defeated incumbent Representative Goldman to become the Democratic candidate.
In the 7th District, State Assemblymember Claire Valdez, supported by democratic socialists, won against Brooklyn Borough President Reynoso, seen as a generational shift in New York's left-wing camp.
However, some voters expressed concerns about overly radical left-wing policies.
Voter Andy: "I think Mamdani is too far left. I don't like policies that seem to ignore fiscal feasibility, like giving everything for free."
The 13th District saw an upset. 32-year-old progressive candidate Chevalier defeated five-term incumbent Representative Esperat, described by outsiders as potentially replicating the 'AOC moment.'
The 12th District was held by the establishment. State Assemblymember Micah C. Russell, supported by Governor Hochul and former Mayor Bloomberg, won, showing that Manhattan's traditional Democratic political network still holds influence.
Voter Kristian: "I really feel we need representatives who understand technology, especially AI, particularly in regulation to protect Americans. That was my main consideration when voting."
Another race attracting Chinese community attention was State Assembly District 65. Democratic socialist Yi Yabo, endorsed by Mamdani, won.
In this primary, among the 11 progressive Democratic candidates endorsed by Mamdani, 10 won, reflecting a clearer leftward shift within the New York Democratic Party.
