The weather in Liverpool will remain unsettled over the coming days as Storm Austen and Storm Boelo batter the UK. Storm Austen is expected to bring strong winds throughout today, Friday October 23. Storm Boelo will bring more disruption over the weekend.
A yellow weather warning for wind is covering Liverpool today, and it will be in place from 10am until 9pm tomorrow evening, Saturday October 24. The Met Office said there will be spells of strong winds, which will be "touching gales" at times.
Further details about the warning said: "Whilst the winds across the warning area are not expected to be as strong as those further south and west, a spell of inland gales is possible with gusts around 45 to 55mph during Friday daytime. In combination with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption."
You should give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or by checking bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. Weather warnings were originally in place in south eastern areas and in Wales, but the Met Office extended its alert to Merseyside.
When the strongest gusts of wind are expected to hit Liverpool
In its hourly forecast for today, the Met Office has indicated Liverpool will reach maximum gusts of up to 50mph between 3pm and 4pm. The wind gusts will strengthen through the afternoon.
Guidance shared by the weather forecaster said: "Being outside in high winds makes you more vulnerable to injury. Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do go out, try not to walk or shelter close to buildings and trees."
To avoid risking injury to others or damage to your own property, you should check for loose items outside your home and plan how to secure them in high winds. Some of the items you should secure include bins, plant pots, garden furniture, trampolines and sheds.
Storm Boelo is a separate low pressure system to Storm Austen, which will bring strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of England on Thursday night and Friday. Storm Austen clears into the North Sea by Friday evening.
What the Met Office has said about Storm Boelo
Chris Bulmer, Met Office deputy chief forecaster, said: "Storm Boelo will bring strong winds and heavy rain to Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England over the weekend, impacting the opposite end of the country to Storm Austen.
"Gusts of 70-80mph in exposed coastal areas and high ground are possible, with 50-60mph gusts more widely. The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain, making for an impactful weekend of weather.
"Severe weather warnings and forecast detail will continue to develop, so people should keep up to date with the forecast over the next few days."
In the outlook for Saturday to Sunday, BBC Weather said: "Saturday will be wet and windy as a band of heavy, blustery rain pushes in from the west. Sunday will continue to be very windy with sunny spells, variable cloud and isolated, blustery showers. Monday will then see another band of rain and strengthening winds move in from the south."
