MOSCOW, August 9, FederalPress. Syria and the Russian Federation have signed a memorandum of understanding defining the future of Russian military bases in the Arab Republic. This was reported by the Syrian Foreign Ministry's public relations department.

The agreement was reached after a year and a half of negotiations and, according to the Syrian side, will open a "new chapter" in bilateral relations. According to the terms of the memorandum, the Russian military bases in Hmeimim and Tartus will be transformed into joint military training centers that will operate in the interests of both states.

In addition, the Syrian department clarified that all civilian infrastructure, including the Hmeimim airfield, will gradually be transferred under the control of the civilian administration of the Arab Republic. The Syrian Foreign Ministry emphasized that in accordance with the signed document, all planned transformations must be completed within a period not exceeding three months.
