Trump intends to receive Zelenskyy on Tuesday

US President Donald Trump intends to receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House next Tuesday, according to government circles. A corresponding visit is planned, a government official told the German Press Agency. Further details are not yet known.

Zelenskyy confirmed the meeting with the US president in a video message in the evening. The talks are primarily about further US support for an end to the war. Strengthening air defense is also a priority, he said.

Recently, US efforts to end the Ukraine war had fallen into the background due to the conflict with Iran. On Thursday, the foreign ministers of Russia and the USA, Sergey Lavrov and Marco Rubio, discussed Moscow's war of aggression against Ukraine at a meeting in Manila.

Rubio later emphasized to journalists that "new proposals and new ideas" are needed for progress toward peace in Ukraine. He pointed to heavy Russian losses recently and the suffering of the Ukrainian population. Both sides therefore have an interest in ending the war that has been ongoing since February 2022.
