The President of the United States, Donald Trump, urged Congress on Sunday to include Iran in a bipartisan sanctions bill against Russia. All in honor of former Republican Senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, who passed away and was the author of the initiative.
"Republicans should include Iran in the sanctions bill against Russia. That's what Lindsey wanted to do, and it was about to happen," Trump detailed on his social network, Truth Social.
The bill, known as the Russia Sanctions Act of 2025, was first introduced in April of that year and had remained stalled in Congress while Trump seeks to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war with Ukraine.
Before his death, Graham had announced progress, indicating that an agreement had been reached with the White House to advance the long-stalled sanctions package against Russia.
The president's call comes after more than a week of renewed conflict between the Trump administration and Tehran, marking the end of negotiations that sought to curb hostilities. The U.S. military carried out retaliatory strikes on Saturday in response to Iranian offensives that killed two American soldiers in Jordan.
Both Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senate Majority Leader Republican John Thune considered that passing the law would be an appropriate tribute to Graham's legacy. However, Democratic lawmakers have expressed concern about the content of the bill, which gives the president broad tariff powers.
