The proliferation of energy storage projects on rustic land in Pollença continues. Two new lithium battery plants are intended to be installed in the municipality, bringing the number of such infrastructure projects in the pipeline to four. The new proposals, which would represent a joint investment of 7.2 million euros, come amid strong local and institutional opposition that, over the past year, has led to several demonstrations, thousands of signatures, and numerous objections against the implementation of these facilities on agricultural land.
The two new projects, named Bocchoris BESS and Pollentia Energy, were made public this Thursday. The first is planned for rustic land in the Llenaire area, near the Pollença electrical substation, while the second would be located on agricultural land in l’Almadrava, next to the road connecting Pollença with Alcúdia, about two kilometers from the urban center. Both facilities would have a power of 11 megawatts (MW), a storage capacity of 20 MWh, and a budget of 3.6 million euros each, representing a joint investment of 7.2 million euros.
In both cases, the companies have requested prior administrative authorization, an environmental impact assessment, and recognition as projects of regional energy interest. The documentation is now subject to public information, with a period of 30 business days to submit objections.
The emergence of these two new proposals is not a surprise to the City Council. At the end of September, the mayor, Martí March, already warned that two other installations were being processed in the vicinity of the electrical substation and announced that the council would again submit objections as soon as the files were made public. Both initiatives were registered before the moratorium on new battery plants, so they can continue to be processed.
The conflict dates back to October 2025, when the Jilguero ST1 project became known, a battery plant planned in the Llenaire area, next to the Sant Jordi stream, on about 3,000 square meters of rustic land. Months later, BESS Servet was added, planned on a 6,941-square-meter agricultural estate in l’Almadrava, next to the Camí de Can Canaveret. Between the two facilities, there is a planned investment of more than 9.5 million euros. Since then, residents have mobilized on several occasions to demand that these infrastructures be located in industrial estates and not in rural areas. The platform Stop Plantes de Bateries de Liti a Pollença has organized various rallies and has managed to gather more than 2,300 signatures against the projects.
