Farmers across the North East are being invited to a special meeting in Darlington later this month to learn more about protecting sheep and cattle from the rapidly spreading bluetongue BTV-3 virus.
The event, organised by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), will take place at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart on Thursday, September 24, and will provide practical advice and support for livestock producers as cases continue to rise across the UK.
Latest figures from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) show that 1,081 cases of bluetongue serotype 3 (BTV-3) have been confirmed during the 2026-27 season, including 943 in England, 114 in Wales and 24 in Scotland.
The number of confirmed cases has doubled in the past three weeks, with the peak of the outbreak expected towards the end of September.
Farmers attending the meeting will hear from industry experts and have the opportunity to ask questions about the disease, vaccination and measures to protect livestock.
Dr Mandy Nevel, AHDB's Head of Animal Health and Welfare, said vaccination remained the most effective way of protecting animals from the disease.
She said: "Over the past few weeks we have seen the bluetongue virus spread from the south-west of England and across large areas of England, Wales and Scotland.
"Vaccination firmly remains the single most effective tool available to help protect vulnerable animals.
"The key message remains clear: it is not too late to vaccinate."
AHDB Beef and Lamb Director Prys Morgan urged farmers not to wait until animals showed clinical signs before seeking advice, while North East Regional Beef and Lamb Engagement Manager Joanne Alderson said the event would provide an opportunity for local producers to get answers from experts and access the latest guidance.
She added: "This is an extremely worrying and stressful time for farmers affected by the disease. AHDB is continuing to provide support and practical guidance to the industry."
