On May 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also named Russian losses at the front, stating that since the beginning of 2026 they have already amounted to more than 145,000 people, "including nearly 86,000 killed, at least 59,000 seriously wounded, and more than 800 Russian servicemen taken prisoner."

Russia does not officially disclose its losses. Moscow last announced the number of killed in September 2022, when it reported 5,937 dead.

In May, Russian publications "Meduza" and "Mediazona" based on name lists estimated Russian army losses at the end of 2025 at 352,000 people. This figure includes 261,000 "regular" dead and 90,000 of those declared dead or missing by court decision, or whose death was registered with a delay of 180 days for other reasons.

Estimates of overall Russian losses (wounded and killed) by international organizations and intelligence services are significantly higher. In December 2025, a senior NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the BBC Russian Service that according to the alliance, the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million people.

According to British intelligence as of May 2026, since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.

Kyiv also did not disclose its losses for a long time, stating that the data would be revealed after the war. Now, approximately once a year, this information is published by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In early February 2026, in an interview with France 2, he stated that since February 2022, Ukraine had lost 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed. The president also noted that there is "a large number of people whom Ukraine considers missing in action."

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi on January 13 this year stated that in 2025 it was possible to reduce the number of casualties among Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel by 13%. He did not provide details on Ukrainian losses.
