The spokesperson for the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, expressed deep concern on Thursday over the persistent military escalation in Yemen and its heavy consequences for civilians in the country and the region.
Quoted by the UN News Centre, Dujarric stated during his daily press briefing that the international organization had received reports of intensified fighting in the governorate of Taiz, in southwestern Yemen.
He specified that the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, is continuing his close contacts with the Yemeni government and the Houthi militias to urge them to take measures to prevent any further escalation.
Dujarric renewed the United Nations' call to all Yemeni parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and to refrain from carrying out attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
