The United States has warned its citizens against travelling to Ethiopia’s Amhara, Tigray and Afar regions amid reports of renewed fighting and disruptions to communications.
The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa said it was aware of reports of active fighting near Lalibela in the Amhara Region.
It said Ethiopian Airlines reportedly suspended flights to and from Lalibela Airport on September 24, 2026, adding that it had no information on when services would resume.
The Embassy also said it was aware of reports that internet and telephone connectivity had been suspended in the Tigray Region.
It advised U.S. citizens in Amhara, Tigray and Afar to leave if it was safe to do so or shelter in place until conditions improve.
The advisory also urged Americans in the affected areas to monitor local media for updates and remain in contact with their airlines regarding flight operations.
The Embassy’s warning comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of northern Ethiopia, where fighting and political tensions have intensified.
