More than four years after the death of the wartime director of the Vukovar hospital, Vesna Bosanac, Zagreb is one step closer to naming a square after the doctor who became one of the symbols of the defense of Vukovar. It is likely that the newly formed square in Donji Vrapč will be named after Vesna Bosanac, and the proposal will be on the agenda of the Committee for Naming Settlements, Streets, and Squares, which will decide on this item at its meeting on Tuesday, June 9. Given the balance of power in the Committee, the proposal should receive the green light from the ruling majority before being sent to further procedure.
The name of this Vukovar doctor was entered into the Fund of Names of Meritorious Citizens, from which streets, squares, and other public spaces are named, back in 2022, on the proposal of the then Club of Representatives of Most in the City Assembly of the City of Zagreb. Two years later, the Council of the City District Trešnjevka - South proposed that a park in Hrgovići Street in Rudeš be named Park of Dr. Vesna Bosanac, but the City Office for Cadastre and Geodetic Affairs rejected the proposed location due to unresolved property relations. Because of this, at the beginning of this year, the Council proposed four new locations for consideration, of which three – a park in Rudeš at a new location, a park in Donji Vrapč, and a square in Donji Vrapč – were deemed suitable for naming.
At a meeting held on April 16, the Council of the City District Trešnjevka - South proposed that the newly formed square in Donji Vrapč, created by merging several cadastral parcels, receive the name of Vesna Bosanac. The debate about naming a public space after Vesna Bosanac also took place in the City Assembly. Representative Tomislav Jonjić (Only Croatia) proposed that Vlade Ranogajca Street be renamed to Dr. Vesna Bosanac Street, emphasizing that this would pay tribute to the wartime director of the Vukovar hospital. Mayor Tomislav Tomašević then stated that he supports the initiative for Vesna Bosanac to get a street in Zagreb. On the agenda of the Committee for Naming Settlements, Streets, and Squares, among other items, is also a draft decision on naming Park Zlatko Cico Kranjčar. After the Croatian footballer and football coach, a park between Leprovička and Ivekovićeva streets in Ferenščica should be named.
