Bui Power Authority posts US$66.2m net profit as revenue hits US$145.9m in 2025

The Bui Power Authority (BPA) recorded revenue of US$145.9 million from generation in 2025, while net profit reached US$66.2 million, according to its 2025 Corporate Annual Report.
The strong financial performance comes as the state-owned power producer expanded its renewable energy portfolio, increased electricity generation beyond target and advanced several strategic projects aimed at strengthening Ghana’s long-term energy security.
Speaking at the Authority’s annual stakeholders’ meeting, Chief Executive Officer Ing. Kow Eduakwa Sam said the institution remained resilient despite leadership changes across the energy sector during the year.
“The 2025 financial year was characterised by leadership transitions at the Ministry of Energy, the Board of Directors and Executive Management of the Bui Power Authority. These changes were accompanied by broad shifts in policy direction across the energy sector. The Authority maintained operational stability and adapted to the new strategic direction of the sector,” he said.
The report showed that BPA increased its installed solar PV capacity from 55 megawatt-peak (MWp) to 105MWp, bringing its total installed generation capacity to 404MW of hydro and 105MWp of solar.
The Authority also maintained a strong asset base and recorded improvements across most of its operational efficiency indicators while making progress in reducing outstanding receivables from key customers.
“The Authority saw improvement in some of its prevailing challenges, particularly the sector-wide receivables challenges with key customers, and will continue working to strengthen financial sustainability and deliver long-term value,” Ing. Sam stated.
Power generation also exceeded expectations during the year. Total electricity generation from all sources reached 1,438 gigawatt-hours (GWh), surpassing the projected 1,350GWh by 6.5% and exceeding the 1,348GWh generated in 2024 by 6.7%.
Hydropower remained the Authority’s largest source of generation, with the Bui hydro plant producing 1,339GWh, representing a 5% increase over the previous year.
The expansion of solar generation also contributed to the improved performance.
During the year, BPA commissioned 50MWp of its ongoing 100MWp solar photovoltaic project, raising operational land-based solar capacity to 100MWp.
Together with its 5MWp floating solar facility, total installed solar capacity reached 105MWp.
To improve the reliability of renewable power supply, the Authority also commissioned a 28 megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to enhance grid stability and support greater integration of solar energy into the national grid.
As a result, electricity generated from BPA’s solar installations increased to 102GWh in 2025 from 76GWh a year earlier.
The Authority said work continues on the remaining 50MWp phase of the 100MWp solar project, the 50MWp Yendi Solar PV Project, the 25MWp Floating Solar PV Project and the renegotiated 20MWp land-based solar project at the Bui Generating Station, with all expected to be completed in 2026.
Looking ahead, BPA plans to operationalise 145MWp of ongoing solar projects in 2026 while undertaking feasibility studies for a 500MWp solar photovoltaic plant with a 400MWh battery energy storage system.
The Authority also intends to commence construction of a 200MW solar PV plant with a 100MWh battery energy storage system, with about 80MWp expected to be operational by the end of 2026 to help narrow the country’s projected electricity supply-demand gap.
On operational safety, Ing. Sam said the Authority maintained its strong safety record throughout the year.
“The safety of our employees, contractors and host communities remained a top priority for the Authority. Throughout the year, the Authority maintained a strong safety culture aimed at preventing accidents and incidents. As a result of these efforts, the Authority recorded zero lost-time injuries in 2025,” he said.
The Authority also disclosed that feasibility studies for proposed hydropower projects on the Tano, Pra and Ankobra rivers, as well as Wli Falls, had reached 35% completion by the end of 2025.
According to BPA, the projects are expected to expand Ghana’s renewable energy capacity and improve the integration of multiple renewable energy sources into the national electricity system.
