Joshua Baer, founder of Capital Factory and a figure linked to Austin's tech ecosystem, has been identified as the person who died following an aircraft crash that occurred on Tuesday night in Laredo, Texas. Capital Factory confirmed the death, while local authorities reported that six people were on the plane, which crashed near Loop 20 and Saunders Street. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, so the investigation remains open, and definitive technical data will come from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The accident occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m. local time, 9:00 p.m. Monterrey time, in an area near the Laredo airport. The aircraft, registration N523QS, was operated by NetJets and identified as a Cessna Citation Latitude. After impact, the plane caught fire and broke in two, while motorists, witnesses, and emergency crews attempted to help the people inside.

Capital Factory, a firm based in Austin, mourned Baer's death and stated that the organization will continue operating. Bryan Chambers, president of the company, said: “Joshua was a fearless leader, a brilliant partner, and a dear friend to many of us.”

“While we are devastated by this unimaginable loss, Josh built an incredibly resilient organization and team. Capital Factory remains fully operational and we are totally committed to continuing his mission of supporting unstoppable entrepreneurs,” Chambers added.

What is known about the Laredo plane crash?

The plane crashed on the Bob Bullock Loop, also known as Loop 20, near the intersection with Saunders Street and Clark Boulevard. The area was closed to traffic in both directions due to the fire, aircraft debris, and the risk from fuel and hazardous materials.

According to Laredo Police Department spokesman Joe Baeza, six people were on the aircraft. In initial reports, it was unclear whether the fatality was a passenger or a person on the ground, but Baer was later identified as the only deceased person among those on board.

Authorities also reported no fatalities among occupants of vehicles on the roadway. However, the crash caused traffic disruptions and an emergency response in the area.

Who was Joshua Baer?

Joshua Baer was the founder of Capital Factory, a firm based in Austin focused on supporting entrepreneurs, startups, and tech projects. His name was well-known in the business and tech community of Texas.

The company described him as a key figure in its growth and in boosting entrepreneurs. After confirming his death, Capital Factory asked for respect for the family and stated that it will continue its activities.

His death especially impacts the Austin startup community, where Baer was considered a relevant player for his work mentoring entrepreneurs and growth-stage companies.

Where was the aircraft coming from and going to?

According to specialized websites cited in initial reports, the aircraft reportedly departed from Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, at 6:19 p.m., bound for Austin, Texas.

The plane ended up crashing in Laredo, a border city in Texas, before reaching its final destination. So far, authorities have not reported a definitive cause for the crash.

Available information indicates that the aircraft may have reported problems before the accident, but any conclusion about mechanical failure, operational error, or other cause must await the results of the federal investigation.

What happened after the impact?

After the crash, the aircraft caught fire and several people nearby got out of their vehicles to try to help. Images released showed the damaged plane with fire and people trying to open a cabin window.

Zayra Garza, a witness who said she works at a beauty salon, recounted that she was taking her coworkers home when she came across the scene. She began recording as she approached and then stopped her vehicle in front of the plane.

“It looked like a movie scene. I was in shock,” Garza said.

The witness added that what worried her most was the fire. “I was afraid it could explode at any moment,” she recounted.

According to her testimony, several people tried to break the window from outside while someone inside the plane tried to get out. Then the door opened and several people managed to escape. Garza also narrated that a crew member tried to pull someone out of the plane who seemed to be unconscious.

Which authorities are investigating the crash?

The Laredo Police Department responded to the emergency at the site and asked the public not to approach the area due to risks from fire, fuel, and aircraft debris.

Joe Baeza warned that initial information should be taken with caution because the case was just beginning to be investigated.

“It's only the beginning of a very long process,” the spokesman said.

He also explained that the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration would participate in the investigation. “The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will come later and conduct their own investigation,” he indicated.

In plane crashes, these agencies typically review flight records, tower communications, aircraft condition, maintenance, trajectory, impact debris, and available witness statements.

What data is not yet confirmed?

Although Joshua Baer has been identified as the fatality, there is still information that should not be considered closed.

As of now, there is no official conclusion on:

  • The exact cause of the accident.
  • The complete sequence of failures or emergencies before impact.
  • The final technical condition of the aircraft before the crash.
  • The responsibility of individuals, companies, or external factors.
  • The results of federal expert reports.

Therefore, any version about the cause of the accident should be treated as preliminary until the FAA and NTSB present official information.
