Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed bilateral relations and the latest regional and international developments, and witnessed the signing of 12 agreements, memoranda of understanding, and a declaration of intent between the two countries.
The Oman News Agency reported that Macron received Sultan Haitham at the Elysee Palace in the capital Paris, and they held a bilateral meeting that discussed a number of political and economic issues and files of common interest.
It explained that the meeting touched on the most prominent current developments and changes on the regional and international arenas, and their repercussions at various levels.
According to the agency, the two sides stressed the importance of continuing to strengthen bilateral cooperation and develop the prospects of strategic partnership between the two countries, by expanding areas of investment and economic and trade exchange.
It indicated that Sultan Haitham bin Tariq and French President Emmanuel Macron witnessed the signing of 6 agreements, 3 memoranda of understanding, and 3 declarations of intent between the two countries, covering the fields of economy, energy, space, transportation, services, health, and culture.
On Sunday, the Sultan of Oman began a visit that is the first to France and lasts two days, amid tensions in the region and the Strait of Hormuz, which the sultanate overlooks.
The agency reported that a high-level delegation including political, diplomatic, and economic officials is accompanying the Sultan of Oman on his visit.
According to the Omani Foreign Ministry, relations between Muscat and Paris have been continuously developing since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries more than five decades ago.
The visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq is the first by an Omani sultan to Paris in about four decades, and the first since he assumed power in 2020.
The late Sultan Qaboos bin Said previously visited France in May 1989, which was the first official visit by an Omani sultan to a European country.
