TRIBUN-MEDAN.com - The public is waiting for the determination of fuel price adjustments.
Is PT Pertamina lowering fuel prices amid the decline in world oil prices?
Usually, Pertamina adjusts fuel prices based on global oil market prices.
As known, world oil prices fell following the peace agreement between Iran and the United States (US).
One of the points of the agreement was the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a transportation route for oil tankers.
Pertamina's Response: Will Fuel Prices Be Lowered?
Pertamina Patra Niaga stated that non-subsidized fuel prices, including Pertamax, will continue to be evaluated periodically by the government, taking into account global oil price movements and the rupiah exchange rate.
According to international market data, Brent crude oil prices fell below 80 US dollars per barrel in the past week.
On June 16, 2026, Brent was recorded at 78.96 US dollars per barrel, down about 5 percent from the previous day, marking the lowest level in three months.
The decline continued on June 18, 2026, to around 77.41 US dollars per barrel after the US-Iran agreement reopened the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil distribution routes.
Romi Bahtiar, Acting Area Manager of Communication, Relations and CSR for Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional North Sumatra (Sumbagut), said the previous increase in Pertamax prices was influenced by several factors, especially the rise in world oil prices and the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar.
"The price is the price agreed upon by the government and Pertamina. The increase occurred due to several factors, namely the rise in world oil prices and the rupiah exchange rate," Romi said on Thursday (June 18, 2026).
However, Romi emphasized that Pertamina remains committed to maintaining fuel availability for the public, both subsidized and non-subsidized.
"Pertamina Patra Niaga remains committed to maintaining fuel availability, both subsidized and non-subsidized, for the needs of the Indonesian people," he said.
Responding to a question about the possibility of a decrease in Pertamax prices after the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which drove world oil prices down, Romi said pricing policy will be determined through periodic evaluations by the central government.
"Of course, this price will be evaluated periodically by the central government. So we will also inform if there is an increase or decrease. Because the price refers to the rupiah exchange rate and world oil prices," he said.
