The recent massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow had above all a strong political and symbolic value. The operation, while demonstrating Kyiv's ability to strike deep into Russian territory, does not change the military balance on the eastern front, where Russian pressure in the Donbass and competition for control of the main operational axes continue to weigh. The objective seems rather to strengthen the message to Western allies, confirming that Ukraine maintains offensive capabilities and remains able to strike high-profile targets.

The war is now developing on two parallel levels: the military one and that of strategic communication. On the ground, logistics, munitions, troop rotations, and territorial control matter, but on the political level, symbolic attacks capable of influencing debate in Western capitals and keeping attention on the conflict are gaining importance.

Drones have established themselves as one of the main tools of contemporary attrition warfare. Their relatively low cost and ability to bypass part of traditional defenses allow strikes on infrastructure, airports, refineries, and urban centers, forcing the adversary to invest significant resources in protecting territory. However, media and psychological effects do not necessarily equate to a change in the strategic picture on the field.

The attack occurred while within the European Union the confrontation continues between those who support maintaining maximum pressure on Russia and those who, without questioning support for Kyiv, consider the opportunity to keep some channels of communication open with the Kremlin. The divergences among the main European capitals reflect the growing difficulty of identifying a shared strategy for managing a conflict destined to last.

On the economic front, the war continues to produce significant effects on both Russia and Europe. Moscow has accelerated its orientation towards Asian and Global South markets, while the European Union must face rising costs related to defense, energy security, and financial support for Ukraine. In this context, any hypothesis of future détente inevitably also takes on a geoeconomic dimension.

The episode confirms that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has become a multidimensional competition in which military, diplomatic, economic, and media aspects are constantly intertwined. For Kyiv, maintaining Western support remains a fundamental strategic necessity. For Europe, instead, the challenge consists in reconciling support for Ukraine with the political and economic sustainability of a war that continues to put pressure on governments, public budgets, and public opinions.
