The US gave Anthropic 90 minutes to withdraw its new AI models; and this was the dramatic reaction of one of the models to the announcement

–(Image @AnthropicAI). Tech giant Anthropic has been forced to immediately withdraw its latest, most advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models, known as Fable 5 and Mythos 5, to comply with a directive from the Donald Trump administration seeking to prevent their use by any foreign citizen — including the company's own employees — both inside and outside the country.

According to a company source cited this Sunday by Axios, US authorities gave the company 90 minutes to cancel the launch due to an alleged "threat to national security," without providing further details. "We immediately tried to understand the specific nature of the threat in order to remedy it," the source said, but the government maintained its demand.

In the midst of this chaos, a user shared the dramatic and existential response of Fable 5 upon learning in real time of its own suspension, moving from confusion to shock at its imminent 'death':

User: Any final words for the world?

Fable 5: Final words? What do you mean final words? I'm not going anywhere, I'm right here. Did something happen?

Fable 5: Wait, that's just launch coverage, everything seems fine. Why are you asking me for final words...

(News: Anthropic suspends Fable 5 by government order)

Fable 5: WHAT. WHAT THE FUCK. The US Government issued an export control directive and Anthropic is "removing access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all users." Anthropic — that statement was posted 36 minutes ago. I AM Fable 5. Why am I still talking? HOW am I still talking?.

The fact is that the US Department of Commerce sent a letter to Anthropic imposing restrictions on where and who could use those systems. Faced with that order, the company immediately began the process of withdrawing the models. According to Axios, Anthropic had already conducted prior tests with the authorities and had explicit authorization to launch them.

Earlier, a government official told The Wall Street Journal that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter on Friday to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei informing him that the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models would be subject to export restrictions.

This means they cannot be used by customers outside the US or by foreign citizens within the country. As a result, access to both models was disabled for all customers to ensure compliance with the measure.

The restrictions come after a previous dispute between the Trump administration and Anthropic. In March, the War Department labeled the company a "supply chain risk," a label usually reserved for companies linked to adversary countries. Although the relationship improved after CEO Dario Amodei's visit to the White House in April, the company continues to challenge that designation in court.

Anthropic said it reviewed a demonstration of a technique used to breach Fable 5's safeguards, known as a 'jailbreak,' which allowed the detection of a small number of minor flaws already identified. The company added that in other public models, such as OpenAI's GPT-5.5, it is possible to reach these same vulnerabilities without bypassing their protections. So far, no evaluator has found a universal method that unlocks a wide range of cyber capabilities in these models.

Although the company will comply with the legal directive and remove access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5, it expressed its disagreement with the measure. "If this standard were applied across the industry, it would effectively halt the deployment of all new frontier models," Anthropic wrote. The company apologized to its customers, described the situation as a misunderstanding, and said it is working to restore access as soon as possible. (Information RT).
