Watermelon Smuggling Allegations Emerge in Thessaly as Price Gap Widens

Reports indicate that watermelons are being sold to Balkan countries at 5 cents per kilo, far below the field price of 13 cents, suggesting undeclared loads and black money transactions.

& It was only a matter of time before Rouvikonas in Larissa started wreaking havoc, after the "warm-up" with flyers and paints on the walls of political offices. On Friday night, they broke the parking meters and equipment of two municipal parking lots in the city, because they disagree, they say, with the fact that to park you have to pay.

With Rouvikonas' logic, whoever disagrees, for example, with mobile phone charges should smash the windows of stores or do the same with KTEL because they have a ticket. We are talking about absurdity in a democracy like the Greek one which, however problematic it may be, must find its way through the free will of its citizens and not through reckless violence that leads to bad paths.

As for the Municipality of Larissa, now they are paying the price. Months ago, they had granted a municipal hall to Rouvikonas to hold... elections.

@ There is watermelon smuggling in the plain and it is thriving, despite the fact that this year is bad for this particular fruit. A person in the know told us that trucks leave from Thessaly for Balkan countries at a price of 5 cents per kilo, while this season the normal price in the field is around 13 cents.

However, the secret is usually hidden in the cargo bed. For example, there may be 20 tons loaded, but on paper 15 appear. The undeclared difference in the load was paid with black money. The authorities have the ability to detect the fraud if they weigh the truck.

% An incident between Afroditi Latinopoulou and lawyer – former municipal councilor Georgios Bartzokis, last week in Larissa. The president of "Voice of Reason" had gathered her people at "Sherlock", when Bartzokis also appeared. "Get up and leave, you have no place in the party...", she is said to have told him. He left but later returned with friends and wanted to speak to her. The lady was adamant and showed him the exit. Bartzokis is now posting and talking about ingratitude...

& "I am not paid by the Greek taxpayer. I am paid by the ecclesiastical property that has been multiple times confiscated, encroached upon, sometimes donated, sometimes expropriated by the Greek State," argues His Eminence the Metropolitan of Larissa and Tyrnavos to counter the overwhelming criticism that the top of the church received for the doubling of metropolitan salaries.

Nevertheless, he is not convincing. And he does not only say this: "...if the financial aspect was our main concern, very simply we would not become Bishops! Financially it is not worth it... The majority of Metropolitans had alternative professional opportunities, without the many responsibilities and obligations of a Bishop. Especially when 'thank you' is rare, while insults, slanders and biased criticism are the norm. And yet, we consciously sacrificed careers in order to serve Christ and His Church, while at the same time being aware of our unworthiness. And of course, we have now become accustomed to the gall and vinegar, even from people 'of the Church,' or rather especially from people 'of the Church' so much that I wonder why I bother to write this text..."

% 93.78% of the contracts signed in 2024 by the Municipality of Larissa were through direct assignments, former Deputy Mayor of Finance of Kalogiannis, Panagiotis Ntais, denounces. (Eleftheria, Thanasis Arabatzis). That is, out of 900 contracts, 800 were done without a tender, he claims, citing the official monitoring platform of Local Government performance. It sounds outrageous. Let's wait, however, for the opinion of the municipal authority.

The guy – who is quite well-known – before the auctions against him broke out, bought the carcass of an abandoned factory outside Larissa and declared it as the headquarters of his business.
