U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin would be "great," after the Ukrainian president proposed direct talks with his Russian counterpart.
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, "I'm glad they might be talking about holding a meeting. I think we have a big role in that." He added, "I think it would be great if they met," according to AFP.
Putin has not seen the Ukrainian president's message.
Earlier, Zelensky proposed in an open letter on Thursday to his Russian counterpart a direct meeting, also expressing his readiness for a "comprehensive ceasefire."
Zelensky said in his letter: "Ukraine proposes to end this war through direct dialogue between us. I propose to hold a meeting." He added: "Ukraine is ready for a comprehensive ceasefire throughout the negotiation period."
Russia responded by confirming that the Kremlin welcomes the Ukrainian president to meet with Putin in Moscow "at any time."
State media quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying, "Zelensky can come to Moscow at any time," adding that Putin has not yet seen the Ukrainian president's letter.
